Cancer Treatments

With many cancer treatments lasting months up to years in some cases, people may become deconditioned and have difficulty returning to their normal activities. Recent evidence has shown significant improvements in outcomes of patients who are physically active both during and after cancer treatment.

  • 70% of people who have cancer have at least one other long term condition (Macmillan)
  • Rehabilitation programmes are provided for other chronic conditions, e.g. CHD, diabetes, COPD, have been shown to be effective (Hoffman et al. 2016)
  • A Nuffield Trust evaluation (2014) showed that 15 months after diagnosis, compared to a population of the same age/gender, people with cancer had:
    • 60% more A&E attendances,
    • 97% more emergency admissions
    • 50% more primary care contacts
